Assessing Milk Transfer
How to recognise whether your baby is feeding effectively
One of the most common questions new parents ask is:
“How do I know if my baby is getting enough milk?”
In the early days, feeding can feel uncertain - especially as babies often feed frequently and patterns vary. Looking at your baby as a whole, rather than focusing on one thing alone, can help build confidence.
This assessment guide outlines some of the signs that breastfeeding is going well, including feeding behaviour, nappies, swallowing and your baby’s overall wellbeing. It is based on guidance from the UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative.
Signs feeding may be going well include:
✓ Regular feeding (often 8–12 feeds or more in 24 hours)
✓ Hearing or seeing swallowing during feeds
✓ Wet and dirty nappies increasing appropriately with age
✓ Baby appearing relaxed and content after most feeds
✓ Comfortable breasts and nipples, without increasing pain or damage
Remember
Breastfeeding patterns vary hugely between babies.
Frequent feeding, cluster feeding and wanting to feed for comfort are often normal newborn behaviours and do not automatically mean your milk supply is low.
If you’re unsure, worried about milk transfer or feeding feels painful, support is available - you do not need to work it out alone.
