Perineal Massage
Perineal massage involves gently stretching the tissues around the vaginal opening in the final weeks of pregnancy.
Some research suggests that practising perineal massage from around 34–35 weeks may help reduce the likelihood of tearing, particularly for first-time births. It can also help you become more familiar with the sensations of stretching and relaxation, which can feel reassuring ahead of labour.
This is a simple technique that can be done on your own or with the support of your partner, using clean hands and a suitable oil.

A gentle note
Perineal massage is optional - some people find it helpful, while others choose not to do it. Trust what feels right for you and your body.
