Bathing Your Baby
Understanding when, how and why to bathe your newborn
Bathing a newborn can feel a little daunting at first - especially when they seem so tiny and slippery.
The good news is that newborns don’t need bathing every day, and confidence often comes quickly with practice.
This video demonstrates how to safely bathe your baby, including practical tips around preparation, temperature and keeping your baby comfortable throughout.
What this video covers
• What you’ll need before you begin
• Creating a safe and calm bathing environment
• Checking water temperature
• How to safely support your baby during a bath
• Umbilical cord considerations in the early days
• Keeping your baby warm and comfortable afterwards
A few gentle reminders
✓ Babies don’t need daily baths — in the early weeks, cleaning their face, neck folds and nappy area is often enough
✓ Gather everything you need beforehand, as babies should never be left unattended during bath time
✓ Aim for water that feels comfortably warm rather than hot (around 37°C)
✓ Bath time can become a lovely opportunity for connection, skin-to-skin and gentle interaction - but if your baby dislikes baths initially, that’s completely normal too
