Epidural & Spinal Pain Relief
Epidurals and spinal anaesthesia are forms of regional pain relief that can provide strong and effective relief during labour and birth.
They work by numbing the lower half of the body, reducing or removing the sensation of contractions while allowing you to remain awake and aware for your baby’s birth.
These options are commonly used in hospital settings and may be planned in advance or chosen during labour, depending on how things are progressing and your individual preferences.
Understanding your options
Epidural
An epidural involves placing a small tube into the lower back, through which medication is continuously given. This provides ongoing pain relief throughout labour.
Spinal
A spinal is a single injection into the lower back that works quickly and provides strong pain relief for a shorter period of time. It is often used for planned or unplanned caesarean births, or sometimes in combination with an epidural.
A flexible approach
Some people know in advance that they would like an epidural, while others prefer to keep their options open and decide during labour.
There is no right or wrong choice - what matters most is that you feel informed, supported and able to make the decision that feels right for you at the time.
